This extraordinary work is informed by the principle of complementary opposites. The artist notes thatn “Rather than subscribing to the illusion of duality (this or that), this principle teaches that everything — thoughts, emotions, actions, and objects — has a complementary opposite (this and that)”. The interplay of these opposites is represented in a series of intriguing pieces where the central image in each work represents “ordinary reality”; images to the left of center illustrate feelings, sensations, daydreams, and the collective unconscious; images to the right portray memories, thoughts or metaphors attached to past events. The coming together of these visual experiences in each piece provides an intriguing worldview for the viewer to contemplate.
The artist has explored the question of “how do we create meaning?” for the past decade through intensive studies of Andean shamanic practices, which she continues to pursue. She states that her artwork is “inspired by wilderness and wildness, urban landscapes, and consciously cultivated gardens — and is nurtured by an elegant Andean cosmology that has been passed down since the time of the Incas.
Exposed to classical and contemporary art from an early age growing up in Connecticut, Stauffer received her undergraduate degree in Art from Franconia College (New Hampshire), and a Master of Fine Arts degree from Florida State University. Rather than pursue a teaching career, she shifted her focus to arts administration, running the visual arts grant program for the Florida Fine Arts Council and later serving as the artistic director of a regional arts center. After moving to California, in 1983, Stauffer worked for many years at UCSB as the director of community relations, and collaborated with her artist husband Rick Hubbard on functional sculpture, which was widely represented throughout the United States, including former Los Olivos and Santa Barbara galleries: The Story Collection and ZZYZX, and the Elizabeth Fortner Gallery.
