Following this morning’s catastrophic collision near San Marcos Pass and another collision on State and Anapamu streets, yet another occurred at 800 E. Cabrillo Blvd at 1:13 p.m., according to a press release issued by the Santa Barbara Police Department.
When a man driving in a Cadillac Escalade SUV dozed off at the wheel, his car drifted to the right, sideswiping a parked Mercedes Sedan and rear-ending a parked Jeep Cherokee, occupied by two men. And a chain of collisions ensued: The force of the crash caused the Jeep to rear-end the parked Volkswagen ahead, which then rear-ended a parked Honda mini-van. According to the report, the Jeep jack-knifed onto the sidewalk, and the Cadillac flipped upside down.
There were no fatalities. The driver and Jeep occupants are currently being treated at Cottage Hospital, but their injuries are reportedly not life-threatening. According to the report, the Cadillac, Jeep Cherokee, and Volkswagen are totaled and the Mercedes and Honda reportedly damaged.

That's crazy! It must be a full moon!

A Jeep jack-knifed? I thought that was only physically possible with a tractor-trailer combination, where it's unable to get out of the position without external help.

Yep, lorriebelletti, must be the moon, because, as we all know, nothing strange or dramatic or tragic EVER happens when the moon isn't full! Now, gee, I wonder why weird things aren't happening in every block in every community all over the world. Or is the moon only full in parts of Santa Barbara?

It's been hard to sleep the past few nights because of the heat wave and so many of us not having A/C in our homes. I wonder if the heat wave has anything to do with it? Or just common stupidity and lack of paying attention!

No mysteries, the person fell asleep at the wheel.

These Escalade SUV's are dangerous-too big and too heavy.

Interesting comment MacMahler. While admittedly my small sedan would lose in a fight with an S.U.V., I feel safer driving a vehicle that isn't as top-heavy because if I lose control I'm less likely to roll over.

What's the follow-up on an accident like this? Who pays? (I am assuming the Escalade owner - and why wasn't he named? or those injured in the Jeep?) What about the unfortunate owners of the unoccupied VW/Mercedes/Honda? Do they have to go through months of fighting to get repayment? And will they ever be made whole from the insurance company, that is, get vehicles back to as they were? ...Or will they have to go to court ... and the months/years that takes? It would be interesting to have a follow-up on this. Thanks.

Fell asleep at the wheel at . . . 1:13pm.
Sure sounds plausible to me.
Maybe a big fat grease-laden lunch and a glass of fermented beverage? Maybe the beauty of our Santa Barbara beaches is so intoxicating or so severely underwhelming as to induce a potentially lethal dose of disaffected ennui?
Another candidate for a bus token.
Memo to all you morons out there (and yes, I still see you EVERYWHERE) who are TEXTING and YAKKING on your personal central nervous system hijack machines: Knock it off before you kill someone. It is, after all, AGAINST THE LAW!
One year incarceration for first time offenders caught TEXTING or using their hands on a PCNSHM (cell phone) while driving.
