We don’t know all the reasons people kill themselves, but one reason to stay alive is the chance to have breath-taking beauty in our lives, like when crossing the San Marcos Pass Bridge into the Santa Ynez Valley. Putting up a fence may deter some from the final deed, but it—and similar acts of closing down delight—will cause others to do it, even if it means having to find an alternative route.

Good Harvey you realize that the fence may deter some from the final deed, we can agree upon that.

The gorgeous view of the Santa Ynez Valley and the back country mountains will of course still be there and quite visible as one drives on 154 north; the Cold Spring Bridge has no monopoly on the fantastic vistas.

It is a bit car-centric, Harvey, to exclusively emphasize the view from a car only; the more amazing vistas are from the nearby hiking trails. Encouraging people to get into the fresh air, to exercise, and to move without gross emission of carbon and other global-warming gases will buoy spirits more than a glimpse on a bridge.

And for the >90% of cars that have a single driver in them, those drivers should really focus on the road, particularly while crossing the bridge.

Don't even have to hike: drivers can pull off the road at the view spot and quietly enjoy the vista without having to focus on the road or the railings. Even more delight that quiet way.

For those who know Professor Molotoch personally and/or by his work as a leading sociologist, you know that what he is thinks will have significant weight with community leaders, if they hear of them.

So spread the word to them, please, if you agree with him.
