"Mike Stoker waits in the wings."

Stoker would not be running against Jackson or Hodge had "business interests" been successful at securing Stoker an appointmentment to CARB earlier this year:

If anyone deserves the moniker "career candidate, it would have to be Mike Stoker.

As I recall, Stoker was appointed to fill a vacancy as 2nd district supervisor in the mid 80's, lost the election to Tom Rogers, then moved to Santa Maria where he won one term as 5th district supervisor. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think he's won an election since then.

Ever since Prop 13 passed and the State had to get involved in education funding, it's been a mess. Hence the need for local funding mechanisms like Props W & X. Jerry Roberts has some good columns in the archives about that.

Music education for our kids is a great investment. Studies show that learning music teaches kids concepts needed to do well in science, engineering, and mathematics. Plus it's fun and helps kids build self-confidence.

Many private sector companies would killl to have a 50% overhead rate!

The overhead rate at some of the large tech firms I've worked at have been in the 100% to 200% range. In the tech boom years of the late 90's the upper range wasn't uncommon but companies have learned to pare back a bit since then.

A former co-worker moved to Sacramento and is now playing ... Segway Polo! It's apparently a big thing in NorCal.

@contactjohn

I think many of the comments are good-natured ribbing. The three cops I know have good senses of humor and would take them as such. Great guys to have on your side too.

That said, two of them are in excellent physical condition even though one is retired. The third? Well, like me he enjoys doughnuts too much :)

Very cool. Reminds me there was an earlier article on goat lawnmowers @Devereaux:

At least you can't steal a cop's Segway while the officer is in ye olde doughnut shoppe or is otherwise occupied. Like many new cars these days, Segways come with wireless smartkeys:

Doughnuts and Segways ... I think they make a good combo :)

I am definitely missing Scolari's. Friendly people, tasty scones, good produce, and no pricing games (how can it be I "save" $100 each time I shop at Ralph's???).
