Leave it to SB to find a way to gunk up another street and create more choking, gridlocked, crawling, bumper-to-bumper traffic. SB is not known for its smoothly moving streets, and it's just a matter of time before the speed bumps, bulb-outs, red lights, and other methods of making yet another street completely impassable are installed.
Because there is not enough stopped traffic belching tons of carbon monoxide in the air down there, as long lines of cars creep, crawl, and sit in traffic, prevented from getting anywhere in a reasonable amount of time.
Doesn't help that this County worships at the shrine of the tourist, and persists in stuffing 10 pounds of sand in a 5 pound sack...then wonders why it keeps busting at the seams and spilling sand all over...
And the obsession with impeding the smooth flow of traffic and pedestrians at all costs doesn't help, either.
SO glad I don't live down there anymore! :-)

I NEVER walk my dog anywhere without carrying pepper spray, for just the above-mentioned reasons. She is a very happy, peaceful and trusting 40 pound arctic breed dog who wouldn't know what to do with a fight if it sent her an engraved invitation. She loves everyone and thinks everyone loves her, so she has to be protected from the results of human idiocy and irresponsibility in the form of aggressive dogs and even aggressive children. Children are easily handled without the pepper spray, lol, but other dogs...I wouldn't hesitate to give 'em a snootful.
And if their loser owners ran out of brains and decided to get chesty with me, they'd get more of the same.
Really, what IS wrong with these people?

"a Grand Jury report titled 'Homeless Mentally Ill Indigent Recidivism: This Is Not Good for the County' "...
First of all...the homeless members of our population are not all, or even mostly "mentally ill".
Secondly, the focus on whether homelessness is good for the County or not illustrates the priority placed not on people, but on institutions, business interests, & the tourist industry.
Homeless people are just people without conventional housing. They represent a similar cross-section of humanity to that found in conventional housing, with the exception being those with plenty of disposable income; you don't find too many rich people living on the streets.
The definition of insanity is doing the same things the same way repeatedly, & expecting a different outcome. Pretending "the homeless" are all/mostly drug/alcohol-addicted, families, children, criminals, lazy, etc...then pouring a lot of money & professional service providers (referred to in many circles as "poverty pimps") into this stew does not, never has, & never will solve this problem. Yes, it makes everyone FEEL good: people who hate homeless/poor people are pleased that something is being done about "those bums", & the hand-wringers feel great that programs & services are being made available.
Meanwhile, we still have homeless residents living among us, the population is exploding, & things are getting worse for them, & for those with shelter. Nobody is really winning except the directors of programs & their paid staff, who make a pretty cozy income & benefits in the poverty biz...& the job security is unrivaled. "The poor we shall always have with us..".
Until we stop relying on our cherished programs/services, & the concept of outsourcing our socioeconomic problems to these and other babysitting/Band-Aid type measures, the population of homeless Santa Barbarans is going to keep soaring. Let go of the myths and claptrap, look at the area culture, economy, poor income to debt ratio (IE earning $8.50 per hour gross while living in a $25.00 per hour net world), & realize that homelessness is not a character defect, it is a socioeconomic condition.
It affects the homeless person, & everyone around him. That impact occurs not just because the Chamber of Commerce and a certain segment of the me-me-me society don't like looking at homeless people...it affects us all on a much deeper level, emotionally, ethically, economically, spiritually.
In a truly civilized society, it SHOULD impact us on that deeper level.

I can breathe a sigh of relief knowing that fivedolphins and the pod were careful not to harm any plankton. WHEW!

Before I read this story I knew that $6700.00 for a BICYCLE was just ridiculous.

SB has a beautiful shelter where there are many wonderful pets for sale who have done nothing wrong but to find themselves lost, homeless due to human error of some sort (lack of training or commitment), and the horrific employment and foreclosure meltdown.
If you have the ability to provide a good, stable home, go have a look at the wonderful pets on offer at the shelter for a very reasonable price. They'll thank you for it :-)

I bet it is REEEEALLY expensive.
And I'd bet that once they know where you and your animals actually physically live, the animal control will then know where you and your animals physically live and voila! Here they come to bust you for violating SB's draconian Limit Laws, Mandatory Spay/Neuter Laws, and licensing laws.
I have no idea who this vet is, but her association with an org that has some ties to the Animal Rights movement leaves me very leery. My hope is that she is just a nice person who wants to provide a nice service for those who can afford it. Either way, I'd never let her know where we, our unspayed dog, and 3 indoor neutered cats live...
SB is NOT a pet-friendly city or county...don't kid yourself. I know a woman whose 3 dogs were stolen from her and KILLED by AC once they were in their crosshairs. If you own pets there, be VERY careful never to take them out in public or let AC know where you live because it is a matter of WHEN, not IF, they come after you for violating some anti-pet-ownership law or other.
This is probably a great service for people with plenty of disposable income, with one surgically desexed pet under 10 pounds, and no vengeful neighbors. For everyone else; be VERY VERY careful.
What would be very useful is funding for vet care for those who aren't independently wealthy or able to round up credit cards to max out. A lot of animals either go without needed care or are euthanized simply because their owners can't afford the soaring costs of even basic vet care.
Just a thought.

hank writes:
Several people, including Rios and Ricardo Venegas from the Franklin Center, wrote letters about their hopes and aspirations for Cruz,"
Of course they have hopes, their jobs depends on that. Thing is this guy is gonna dash all their hopes w/ his lies of changing. It'll never happen.
No, hank...you have it backwards...here, let me explain:
Social services, programs, shelters, etc actually DEPEND on recidivism & a culture of dependency. See...if people actually stood on their own two feet and became independent, then the "providers" would be out of a job...and compared to the kinds of jobs the rank-and-file regular folks have to work in order to survive...those "provider" jobs are pretty cushy. They also carry big fat benefits like health coverage, retirement, paid time off, paid holidays, and they pay a LOT more than $8.00 (before taxes) per hour.
So...in conclusion: "providers" NEED guys like Cruz. WHen Cruz messes up, then he puts even MORE "providers" to work in the form of jail guards, jail support staff, social workers, counselors, etc. Everybody wins!
Well...everybody except society and of course, Cruz himself.

Well, it appears that the parasites on her payroll are STILL grabbing for her money, even after her death.
What is most offensive here is that this woman had no visitors, none of these now-concerned distant relatives could be bothered to see her or spend any time with her. These people were more than happy to go about their lives and let the paid nurses, lawyers, and other staff care for her, while they sat and waited for her to die so they could swoop in and grab whatever they could.
Shameful! Disgusting! Every penny left should go to open the art museum and whatever else she wanted, and the relatives should get shown the door and given not one red cent. Frankly, the nurses and lawyers deserve what they have FAR more than the parasitic relatives do!
