How was it a 'straw-man' argument, John? Everything dogsnsand said was empirical and in no way misrepresented the issue at hand. These are certainly valid concerns, especially if all the facts are not presented. Did the person have any credentials? Did they actually own the home, or were they representing someone who owned the home.

And your comment about the concerned public showing up "tipsy" is in poor taste. Conjecture doesn't belong in a rational argument.

Love the conspiracy theories, Elijah. If you weren't divining your own wild ideas for the issue, you might have remembered that the governor was not issued a ticket for riding without a motorcycle license because the motorcycle he was riding had a sidecar. If the vehicle has three or more wheels, you do not need a Class M1 license to ride it.

Ever heard of Occam's Razor? The simplest explanation is usually the correct one.

Wow. A million bucks, eh? I'm all for honoring our veterans, but a single art installation for a million dollars? I realize it's private money, but couldn't it be put to better use at the VA or some organization that supports veterans??

And seriously, guys, what's with the typos? This isn't the first time a word germane to the discussion is completely wrong. Especially when R is completely across the keyboard from L.

Latinos "celebrated" May Day, or didn't go to work and protested all the things that they wouldn't get in trouble for if they were here legally?

edukder, if you are able to stab someone 16 times while being in a defensive posture, e.g. beneath someone, or enduring an onslaught of blows, etc., you are clearly in more control of the situation than just slashing in the air at someone.

And quite the contrary, Arizona to Santa Barbara. There is no "rule of thumb" for defense, and how presumptuous and arrogant of you to infer that was what I was saying.

Landing 16 blows with a knife is not self-defense. Stabbing a person once should be enough to inflict a significant amount of pain to disuade an attacker. Stabbing them 16 times is enough to kill them.

I'm glad the jury found him guilty of something. You don't stab someone 16 times in self-defense. One or twice, even three times, perhaps. But to stab someone 16 times is murder, even if you weren't the agressor.

TheBiggerPicture is correct. Most cops do not like living in the district (L.A.) or city in which they work. However, Altadena is more than certainly a stretch, and these cops can afford to live in Carp, Goleta, Buellton or the like and not take two hours to assemble a SWAT team.

On Where Do Santa Barbara Cops Live?

Please. We all know that between pre-filled-out forms, shredded documents, embezzlement, and an unaccountable chief, there's some real issues with the Santa Barbara Police Department. And we all saw the video (and know how few SBPD cars actually have cameras to keep their officers accountable). This guy had the crap kicked out of him, and by an officer who solicited a date from someone he pulled over.

And as far as the news-press goes, every news outlet picked up on the Peter Lance DUI case: Noozhawk, The Daily Sound, the Independent. And I believe it was Noozhawk who picked up this story first, and interviewed all the witnesses before the police could "encourage" a different story.

So I'm sorry if your utopia has been shattered; the big city issues have come to town, and now you have to face them.

We all can get a reduction in our property taxes if we petition the County Assessor. Caruso is not unique in this. His assessment of the value was quite low, but that's what the Assessor is for.
